Another day, another year finished. So! What's the verdict? Was it better than 2013?

...

NO! NO IT WAS NOT!! It was WORSE than 2013! It was worse than 2009, 2012, and the end of 2011 combined!! You know why?! Because I joined Tumblr, that's what! I've been berated, bullied, demonized, antagonized, verbally and emotionally abused, and treated like the spawn of Satan by any Tumblr section of fandoms, namely the Pretty Cure Tumblr fandom! Why? All because I write the way I do! Just because I write about rape and victim shaming does NOT mean I advocate those things, and people shouldn't define me solely based on both my writing and my mistakes! I called them out on this but do they listen?! No! They don't! They claim I'm a super bad person who's selfish and should know things even though I don't and that I don't care about anyone but myself blah blah blah! I'm sorry, guys! I know it's been months ago and I need to get over it, but I can't! I just can't! I don't enjoy writing anymore because of it! I'm being demonized by people because they're exaggerating parts of my writing and making snap/false judgments about me and make a big deal out of everything I do! They don't even PM me to talk to me about it in a civil manner, and I know for a fact that they're going to hold all these incidents over my head for the rest of my life and define me entirely based on them! I hate this! I really hate this! All I want to do is write fan fiction and make friends, not cause drama! The worst part of it is, I wrote about dark issues in other fan fics such as my Pokemon and Digimon fan fics, and nobody I knew made an issue about them! If people can write dark, violent, sexual stuff in other kids show fandoms, then I don't see why it's not allowed in Pretty Cure!

But you know what? I'll be darned if I'm quitting now. I'm not going to sit here and let these people decide what I should and shouldn't write. I'm not going to bend to their whims and change my stories every time they whine. If there's one thing I hate, it's being misunderstood and judged solely based on stupid things, and clearly, this is what some members of the Pretty Cure fandom are doing, and I'm not going to stand for it, and neither are my friends. Worst of all, they're justifying it and won't acknowledge their own mistakes in the matter because it's all on me and I triggered someone blah blah blah! But even with that, does that give them the right to judge me and whine like babies and make a big deal out of this and demonize me?! No. No it doesn't. And I won't stand for it. Not anymore.

Next year, I'm taking the initiative. I'm going to live life the way I want to, make friends, get better at writing and drawing, find people who like me for me, make the best of every day, and reach out to people. Because this can't go on. I can't go on questioning my existence all the time. I can't let every little thing people say get to me.

...Why wasn't this in my childhood?!

Sometime earlier this year, I stumbled upon an Anime News Network article about Moomins. It's a book series by Swedish-Finnish author Tove Jansson, and was so popular in Japan that it was adapted into three anime in 1969 (this one is the most hated version), 1972, and 1990. This one is about the 1990 series, which happens to be the most well known. To this day, only 19 episodes are subbed, and it's a shame, because it's a very cute, well written, and heartwarming series. Why wasn't this brought to America?! I would have eaten it up! I'm eating it up right now!

The Moomins is about Moomintroll and his parents, Moominmama and Moominpapa who live in Moominvalley. There isn't much of a plot, as it's mostly Moomin and his friends Floren (called Snork Maiden in the books and everywhere else but I prefer Floren), Little My, Snufkin, Sniff, and others going on fun adventures and living life. But seriously, this is one of the best children's anime I've seen.

Edit: As of now, episodes 20-22 have been subbed, as the original fansubbing group is back! Yes!

Moment #1: Discovering Moominvalley.

Studio Ghibli. There's no anime or animation fan out there who doesn't know who they are.

Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and other Ghibli animators have been around since the seventies, though Ghibli wasn't officially founded until the mid to late 1980s. Ever since then, they've become the paragons of animation, revered and loved by anyone and everyone in all countries. My parents tell me they showed me Totoro when I was very little, but I have no memories of it. But I never really got into Ghibli until fairly recently. I remember my animation class showing Spirited Away in high school, and everybody and his dog loves that movie...but I don't. I had no idea what was going on in it, and the whole thing just felt inconsistent and annoying to me.

But then, a couple months ago, there was a rumor going around that Ghibli was going to shut down and close its doors forever. Everyone was in a panic, myself included. Thankfully, that rumor turned out to be false, as an interview with Toshio Suzuki clarified that Ghibli wasn't shutting down completely, but rather going on hiatus for a while. Spring cleaning, Suzuki called it. Apparently, some of their recent movies hadn't been turning good profits and that ever since Miyazaki officially retired, the studio couldn't quite get its act together. But no worries, fans. Ghibli will return one day.

The main reason I started getting into Ghibli movies recently was that I heard some of them were good. I saw a good portion of Kiki's Delivery Service, but due to other obligations I couldn't finish it, but I plan on getting the DVDs soon. I also saw From Up on Poppy Hill, and it was good, but it didn't really hook me. But the only two Ghibli movies I absolutely LOVE are The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Whisper of the Heart.

These are the only two Ghibli films I absolutely adore with all my heart, Kaguya for its sublime animation, heart wrenching story, and its pushing boundaries, and Whisper of the Heart for its simpler story, subtlety, great characters, and very relatable and down to earth premises and messages. Both these films have strong places in my heart, and I can't wait to show them to people if I ever get the DVDs.

Moment #3: The moment I realized just how great Ghibli actually was.

For years, it's been believed that shows for girls wouldn't sell. Network executives just don't believe kids will like shows for girls, which isn't true. But in the 1990s and early 2000s, Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura aired on American airwaves, edited, censored, and altered to make it more palatable to American audiences. Despite the edits, Sailor Moon was successful, whereas Card Captor Sakura didn't do as well as SM did. But still, people loved those shows altered or not, and hold fond memories of them. They were groundbreaking for their time, and their fans gobbled up any DVDs and VHSes they could find for them. Unfortunately, when their licensors went under, they were pretty much inaccessible for years. Licensing companies tried to get their hands on them to no avail, whether due to licensing issues or concerns that they won't do well. After almost a decade, fans were ready to give up on them ever seeing the light of day again.

Then, on one fateful day (get it, Cardcaptors fans?) in April, NIS America announced it had licensed Card Captor Sakura, complete with the previously unaccessible Animax dub for fans to see for the very first time. After that, in May of 2014, Viz Media made the announcement that would change everything: they had licensed Sailor Moon in its entirety, Stars included (which had never come to the US before), complete with giving it a full-on, unaltered re-dub of the series with better voices and no alterations. These were happy days for anime fans.

Welcome back, girls.

Moment #4: Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura coming back to the US after years of being out of print.

Ah, Pokemon Yellow, how you've stayed with me all these years, and how happy I am to have finally completed you.

I got Pokemon Yellow when I was seven years old. It was my first ever video game, along with a green GameBoy Color, my first ever console. I still have the latter, but it doesn't work anymore. But out of boredom I decided to play Yellow on my GameBoy Advance SP. The nostalgia bomb was fantastic! But back when I first got it, I didn't understand the concept of completing games, so I never got to complete it until now. As of today, I have finally completed Pokemon Yellow! And no, I'll never get rid of it. Ever!

Moment #5: Finishing the first ever video game I ever got, Pokemon Yellow.

Hoenn confirmed!

Unlike most, I never lost interest in Pokemon during the days of Hoenn. In fact, my continued interest in Pokemon and anime in general was beginning to blossom at that time, and I have very vivid memories of when the original Ruby and Sapphire games came out, such as when my mom got me Sapphire for Easter, and then Ruby a couple months later on my birthday. I consider these games personal milestones for me: they're the first games I ever truly beat, the Elite Four are the first I ever beat, and they're the first games I ever truly completed. When Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were announced, you won't believe how happy I was. I got Alpha Sapphire the day it came out! I even played it at school for a short while! But I beat Alpha Sapphire and I can say this: GameFreak really outdid themselves with these games. They improved on all of the original's flaws and so much more. Still bummed about no trainer customization, but it is what it is. The Hoenn saga may not be everyone's favorite, but it'll always have a special place in my heart no matter what.

Moment #6: Reliving my nostalgia through Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Started September of 2012. Finished on July 2014.

I was far too young when Sailor Moon first came out in both Japan and America, so I wasn't one of the many people watching it on TV. In fact, the only memories I have of Sailor Moon were a snippet of Sailor Venus's introduction episode and the SuperS movie when it came on on Toonami, but that was it. But later, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to watch the entire series. Yes. 200 whole episodes, filler included. But I persevered over the years and finally finished it. I'm behind on Crystal, but I'll get to it. I have the first DVD set and I'm gonna rewatch the whole series again in English (Viz version. Can't stand the DiC version even if I tried). I should get around to watching the live action version.

Moment #7: Finishing the entire Sailor Moon anime.

I really wanted to go to Colossalcon this year to meet Bryce Papenbrook, but my dad couldn't get the day off that day, so he decided to let me go to the local anime convention around our area, Tekkoshocon. It was a nice little convention, and the dealer's room was MUCH bigger and better than Matsuricon's by a long shot! I wouldn't mind going back there again and taking my friend Sami with me!

Moment #9: Tekkoshocon 2014
juliko25: (Default)
I've been watching anime in Japanese since 2005. But up until early 2014, I always downloaded my anime directly. But then MegaUpload shut down, and it became a LOT harder to download anime via direct download. I noticed that everyone downloaded their anime through torrents. I never knew what it was until this year, and I finally decided to try it out. Now I see why it's so commonplace, and now I'm part of the bandwagon! It's so much easier to use, and even though there's a few catches and hiccups to using it, I can download so much more anime now thanks to it.

Moment #10: Jumping on the torrent bandwagon.

230th Anime: Sword Art Online

245th Anime: Isshukan Friends

Moment #11: Keeping track of anime milestones.

Whelp, it's December, so it's that time of year again, the 12 moments in anime!

Early in 2013, a new Eevee evolution was announced, named Sylveon. As soon as I laid eyes on it, an idea for a fan fic sprung forth in my head. I wrote 14 chapters of a story I call Sylvia The Sylveon. In October of 2013, I finally finished that fan fic, and so far, it's been my single best work ever. Everyone loved it, I enjoyed working on it, people still talk about it, and to this day I consider it my best work. I'm really glad I got to write about Sylvia and her adventures and get this fan fic out of my mind. I even wound up inspiring people to name their Sylveons Sylvia. Thanks everyone who read, reviewed, and liked it! I'm honored that you all love it so much, and it makes me happy that I created something that inspired you, as that's my dream as a writer: to inspire people and give them something they can love and relate to. It's because of people like you that I enjoy writing and keep on writing!

If you're interested, you can read it here: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9013112/1/Sylvia-The-Sylveon

Moment #12: Writing and finishing my first ever Pokemon fan fic.

I went to Tekkoshocon 2014 (now known as Tekko). Hung out in the dealer's room, then stood in line for over 40 minutes to try and get an autograph from Caitlin Glass only to find that the staff put a stop to it once it got late, so I left. Then met up with my mom's friend's daughters and their friends, and we hung out. I really like them, and I want to hang out with them some more. Here's what I got:

A Marill plushie
A Fennekin plushie
A Cinnamoroll plushie cell phone charm
Fractale DVD boxset
Clannad The Movie DVD (God, finally! I've been searching for this thing since it came out but I could never find it cheap until now! Yes!)
Digi Charat DVD boxset (wanted to get the specials too, but those were a bit too expensive)
A ribbon
Pokemon pins (Espeon, Sylveon, and Chikorita)
A Rainbow Dash's cutie mark cell charm...which is now lost and gone forever (WAAAAH!!!!!)
Another Madoka's Soul Gem cell charm
An Attack on Titan backpack
A My Little Pony blind bag figurine (I got Gardenia Glow)
A CardCaptor Sakura keychain
A Nyanko keychain
A light switch cover with cherry blossoms painted on it
A Madoka Magica shirt
A Pikachu shirt
A really big cake piece cell charm

I REAAAALLY wanted to get more stuff, like an N figure, more Pokemon plushies, the Natsume Yuujinchou DVD sets, a big box of Pretty Cure CDs, and others, but lack of money prevented me from doing so. I also got a free Taiyaki (those things are soooo good! I've been wanting to try it for some time, and now I love it!)!
juliko25: (Default)
I go to Tekko today!

Two days until I go to Tekko! (Yes, I know Tekko starts today, but I can't go until Sunday).

Spring is just around the corner, and I've decided on the anime I'm going to watch over this and the whole summer!

Continuing shows from last season (for me): Doki Doki Precure, Happiness Charge Precure

New Anime:

1. Isshukan Friends
I read bits and pieces of the manga and liked how simple and sweet it was. I'll probably check it out as a time killer.

2. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?
It looks cute and sweet. I hope to God it doesn't become another boring moe anime like Kiniro Mosaic has become. One character already resembles and has the same voice actress as a character from said anime I hate with a burning passion!

Edit: Newsflash. This is officially dropped. The purple haired girl who reminds me of Aya from Kiniro Mosaic appeared in the first episode...and spending the whole episode walking around in her underwear. Really? Just forget it. Make a cute series that's actually clean! At least Kiniro Mosaic did THAT much!

Old Anime:

1. Suite Pretty Cure
I'm enjoying this way more than I should be. Everybody says this is the worst season, but I'm 9 episodes in and I'm enjoying every minute I spend with it. Yes, the conflicts between the characters are silly, but I find them rather realistic, as lots of friends fight over silly stuff and get caught up in misunderstandings. So what if it's not Heartcatch? I don't care. I love Heartcatch, but that doesn't mean Suite is a bad series nor does it have to be like Heartcatch.

2. Tanoshii Moomin Ikka
I came across this anime a couple months ago, and my goodness it is the most adorable thing I've seen! I absolutely love it! It's cute without being obnoxious or saccharine, it doesn't treat its audience like morons, the characters are so endearing and charming (and might even come off as philosophical),

3. Sailor Moon S
I will finish Sailor Moon this year. I sure as heck will. I saw a good chunk of SuperS, but I'm gonna watch it all in chronological order.

4. Alps Stories: My Annette
Licca Fansubs finished subbing this recently, and it looks pretty interesting, so I'll check it out.

5. Angelic Layer
I've been dying to see this for a while, and I almost have all of the old ADV DVDs! I saw a few episodes of this years ago, but I haven't been able to finish it. Once school is over, I plan to.

6. Sailor Moon Crystal
Yes yes, I know, I'm already watching Sailor Moon S (I'm 10 episodes in now), but so what? I might as well check it out.

7. Zambot 3
I'm normally not into mecha anime, but I hear this one's really good and dark, so I figure I might as well check it out. But BY GOD Kappei's voice is UNGODLY annoying and irritating! Also, the outfits are really stupid looking.
